On August 12, 1851, Isaac Singer would patent a machine for commercial use that would revolutionize the textile industry during the latter part of the Market Revolution. This machine was first invented in 1790 by Thomas Saint. It is Isaac Singer’s patents that made the machines more accessible. Of course, that machine was the sewing machine! By 1852, tailors and sewing businesses in Sacramento had sewing machines in their shops, which greatly increased production over sewing by hand. In honor of
